November is traditionally our Installation Evening when we place a new Master into the Chair of King Solomon.

This year Bro K. Combes will be re-occupying that Chair, and so the labour for the evening shall be our Installation Ceremony and Investiture of Officers for the coming 2011-2012 year.

On this occasion, there will be a Festive Board charge of $15.00 for an evening meal.

We look forward to welcoming Visitors to Lodge Ivanhoe to what is our most important night of the year.

Lodge Ivanhoe 879Sc has moved with a new venue and new meeting night!
We used to meet on the first Tuesday night of the month at the RAAFA base in Merriwa, but we have now moved.....

Regular meetings will now be held on the Second Friday night of each month at Curnow Knuckey Masonic Centre, Moolanda Drive Kingsley, in the Stanley Threfall Suite, which is the smaller of the two Lodge rooms, and is the same Temple room used by Royal Stuart Lodge.

Our next meeting will be our ‘first’ meeting at Kingsley and is on Friday 9th September.

This move is a new and exciting beginning for Lodge Ivanhoe and we would like to invite Right Worshipful Masters, Worshipful Masters and in fact ALL Brethren to attend our first night and join us at our festive board to help us celebrate our new Lodge room.

On this occasion we are asking for lodges to advise us on numbers of attending brethren ( if possible ), this is to assist with catering for the South.

The RWM would like to remind Brethren of Lodge Ivanhoe, and any intended Visitors, that our meeting on 4th May will be an official visit to St. John Sportsmen Lodge (WAC) for their Installation meeting, to be held at the Masonic Centre, Moolanda Blvd, Kingsley.

Hence no meeting will be held at our Regular meeting place, and there shall be no preceeding rehearsal meeting.

This evening is our annual Inspection Night, whereby representatives of DGLWA will be present, in order to see that we are doing things properly! Or at least as best we at Lodge Ivanhoe can do, anyway!!

Labour of the evening will be a Demonstration of a Second Degree.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

This evening we will be holding an Election of Officers for the ensuing Masonic Year; those Officers who will working with the RWM-Elect for the year 2009-2010, who will be Installed/Invested at our November meeting.

There will also be a presentation on the "Scottish Masonic Charitable Foundation" by Kelly Mansfield.

The August meeting will be the annual "1st Tuesday Lodges Combined Meeting" - see the picture, get it? Oh dear...

This takes place once a year so that Lodges in the vacinity, who meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month, can all get together, but share in the Working of a Ceremony, with Officers of the different Lodges taking part. We are proud to be the host Lodge this year.

This meeting the Labour will be a 3rd Degree Ceremony, to Raise one of our own Lodge Ivanhoe FC's.

We welcome all visitors, and know all present will endeavour to make this a versy special night indeed for the Candidate.

We hope that many junior Brethren, both Visitors and members, are able to attend this evening, as this is obviously the starting point of their path to understanding the many symbolic lessons learned from Freemasonry.

Lodge Ivanhoe is now in its "Festive Recess", and meetings shall resume on Tuesday 3rd February 2009.

The Story of Ivanhoe

The novel's hero, Wilfred of Ivanhoe, is the son of Cedric, a Saxon nobleman. In the hope of one day restoring the Saxon dynasty, Cedric wishes to marry his ward Rowena, a descendant of Alfred the Great, to Athelstane of Coningsburgh, a descendant of Edward the Confessor. Ivanhoe's love for Rowena, however, threatens these plans, leading Cedric to disinherit him. Ivanhoe joins the Third Crusade, and, fighting alongside Richard the Lionheart in the Holy Land, wins the King's favour. The novel begins with Ivanhoe's return to England, where Prince John is plotting to depose his brother Richard, who has been taken captive in Austria on his way home from the Crusades.

On his way to a great tournament at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Ivanhoe visits his father's house disguised as a pilgrim. Here he saves the life of Isaac, a rich Jew of York, by warning him of a planned ambush. At Ashby, Ivanhoe, with the help of the King who has returned to England in disguise, vanquishes all of King John's supporters, including his great personal enemy, the Templar Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert and the brutal baron Front-de-Boeuf. Ivanhoe is wounded in the tournament and nursed back to health by Isaac's daughter Rebecca. Bois-Guilbert and Front-de-Boeuf then assist a mercenary leader Maurice de Bracy in a plan to abduct Rowena. Her travelling party, which includes Cedric, Athelstane, Isaac, Rebecca, and the still-recovering Ivanhoe, is attacked and all are led captive to Front-de-Boeuf's Castle of Torquilstone. Here Rowena and Rebecca courageously resist the advances of, respectively de Bracy and Bois-Guilbert, who has become enamoured of the Jewess. The castle is successfully besieged by a band of Saxons and outlaws, led by Locksley (alias Robin Hood) and King Richard himself, and the prisoners liberated except Rebecca, whom Bois-Guilbert carries off to the Preceptory of Templestowe.

The unexpected arrival at Templestowe of the Grand Master of the Knights Templar leads to a charge of witchcraft against Rebecca, who only manages to escape immediate execution by demanding trial by combat. At the last moment, Ivanhoe appears as her champion to a face a reluctant Bois-Guilbert who has been commanded to represent his order. At the first pass, Bois-Guilbert falls dead from his horse, unwounded but 'a victim to the violence of his own contending passions'. At the end, Richard reconciles Ivanhoe and Cedric, Athelstane withdraws his claim to Rowena's hand, and Ivanhoe and Rowena marry. Rebecca, stifling her love for Ivanhoe, accompanies her father to Spain, where they hope to find a more tolerant society.

Ivanhoe: The Legend

"Ivanhoe" is a novel by the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Published in 1819 it is the greatest of the 19th century stories of chivalry - set in the reign of Richard Coeur-de-Lion. Ivanhoe was one of the manors forfeited to the Black Prince by "Hampden" after Hampden hit the Black Prince with his racquet during a game of tennis. The three manors forfeited were Tring, Wing and Ivanhoe.

In this romance, set in england in the 12th Century, Scott depicts the glories and abuses of the chivalric age by describing how Wilfred of Ivanhoe wins the Saxon Princess Rowena and champions the Jewess Rebecca. To marry Rowena he must prove that he did not desert his noble Saxon heritage when he adopted the Norman Chivalric code; to free Rebecca he must rise above the religious prejudices of his age.

The patterns for historical romance that Scott established in Ivanhoe include elaborate pageantry, suspense and detailed, often romanticized, descriptions of an earlier age. While the major characters are Scott's inventions, the less figures are drawn from history and legend. The noble King Richard the Lion-hearted, his treacherous brother John, Robin Hood and Friar Tuck are all involved in the intricate details of a plot designed to honour candour, loyalty and courage, whether in outlaw or knight, and to reveal that licentiousness and oppression characterize the Norman conquerers of England.

In the stories, Ivanhoe appears as the Desdichado or disinherited knight. It is written that his armour was formed of steel, richly inlaid with gold, and the device on his shield was a young oak tree pulled up by the roots, with the Spanish word Desdichado engraved on the shield.

Although Ivanhoe was a knight, and the main sport of knights was the Joust, one of the greatest contests within these stories was between Ivanhoe and Robin Hood on the archery field. Ivanhoe drew his bow, carefully taking into consideration the gentle breeze, and let his arrow fly. The onlookers cheered when the arrow struck the exact centre of the target. Robin Hood (Robin of Locksley) then split the shaft of that arrow with his own.
